Sealing is optional. Done at the wrong time or on the wrong surface, it makes things worse.
Cleaning first
Efflorescence, the white haze on new pavers, clears on its own over the first year or can be removed with a proper cleaner. Pressure washing at close range blasts joint sand out and etches paver faces — keep the tip back and the pressure moderate.
What sealer does
Deepens colour, resists staining from food and leaves, and stabilises joint sand. It does not prevent settlement, weeds from seed landing on top, or frost movement.
When not to seal
On a surface that is still curing, on damp stone, or where moisture is coming up from below. Sealing traps it, and the film clouds.
Reapplication
Every three to five years depending on traffic and exposure. A salted driveway wears sealer faster than a shaded patio.
