Built for vehicle loads, not foot traffic
A driveway takes a car, a delivery truck and a winter of plowing. It needs a deeper excavation and a thicker compacted base than a patio, and anybody quoting the same build-up for both is quoting a driveway that will rut.

Patios & walkways
Sized for the furniture you actually own
Most patios are built too small by about a metre. A table with chairs pulled out needs more room than people think, and a walkway two people can pass on is a different width from one that just gets you to the door.

What is under it
The build-up, in order
- Excavation — down to undisturbed subgrade, deeper for a driveway than a patio, with the spoil hauled away rather than spread at the back of the yard.
- Geotextile where the subgrade is soft clay, so the base does not slowly disappear into it.
- Granular base placed and compacted in lifts of roughly 100 mm. One 300 mm dump compacted once is three hundred millimetres of future settlement.
- Bedding layer screeded, not thrown, and never used to correct a base that is out of level.
- Pavers laid to pattern, cut properly at edges rather than filled with slivers.
- Edge restraint spiked into the base along every open edge.
- Polymeric sand swept in and set, so the field behaves as one surface.
Ask every contractor two questions: how deep do you excavate, and how many lifts do you compact? The answers separate quotes faster than the price does — including ours.

Interlock questions
How long does a driveway take?
About a week for a typical residential driveway, depending on demolition and access. Patios are usually three to six working days.
Can you match my existing stone?
Usually. Bring a spare paver if you have one. If the line has been discontinued we will show you the closest current match and put the transition somewhere it reads as deliberate.
Will it settle?
A properly built surface settles a few millimetres in the first season and then stops. Movement beyond that is a base problem, and on our work we come back and fix it.
Can you lift and relay a heaved patio?
Often, yes — if the pavers are sound, the fix is rebuilding the base under them. That is cheaper than new stone and it is the actual cure.
