Privacy around a backyard pool

Pool privacy is a height problem. Most fences stop below the line that matters.

Start with the sightlines

Stand where you will actually sit and look at where the views come from. Usually it is one or two windows, not the whole perimeter — which means you need screening in two places, not everywhere.

Screens over fences

A tall solid fence all the way round feels like a box and often exceeds what by-laws allow. Targeted screening panels or a pergola with slatted sides solve the specific sightline.

Planting at the right height

Columnar evergreens give height in a narrow footprint. Keep them out of the splash zone — chlorinated water and salt systems are hard on foliage.

Overhead

A pergola or sail over the seating area blocks upper-floor views better than anything vertical, and it adds shade at the same time.
