What actually drives the cost of a backyard build

Two quotes for what looks like the same patio can differ by forty per cent. Homeowners assume the gap is profit. Usually it is not — it is depth, disposal and labour hours nobody wrote down.

Where the money actually goes

Excavation and disposal. On a patio you are removing hundreds of millimetres of soil across the whole area, and it has to go somewhere. Dump fees and truck time are real money, and quietly spreading the spoil at the back of the property is how contractors make this number disappear.

Base material. Granular is sold by weight and it is heavy. A deeper base on a driveway is several more truckloads than a patio, plus the machine time to place and compact it in lifts.

Access. A wide-open side yard that a machine can drive through is a different job from a North York lot where every kilo of base and every paver is wheelbarrowed through a 90 cm gate. Same patio, very different labour.

Cuts and detail. A plain rectangle is fast. Curves, borders, banding, inlays, steps and transitions all mean saw time, and saw time is hours.

Stone. Real, but rarely the biggest line. The difference between a mid-range and a premium paver on an average patio is smaller than most people expect.

What to watch for in a cheap quote

No mention of excavation depth or base thickness anywhere in writing
Disposal not listed — meaning it is either not happening or it will be an extra later
Polymeric sand and edge restraint missing from inclusions
A single lump-sum number with no breakdown to argue with
Drainage not mentioned at all on a property that obviously has a water problem

How to control the number without ruining the job

Phase it. Build the structure — grade, drainage, patio, walls, steps — in year one, and put planting, lighting and finishes in year two. Reduce area rather than depth: a smaller patio built properly beats a big one built on 100 mm of fill. And do the parts you will see and touch first.

Never save money under the stone. It is the only part of the project you cannot fix later without taking everything above it apart.
