Where it works

Garden paths, informal patios, stepping-stone routes across lawn, and properties where the house already has natural stone. It suits mature lots better than new subdivisions.

What to know

Thickness varies piece to piece, so setting it level takes longer than a manufactured product. Joints can be sand, polymeric or planted with a low groundcover.

Winter behaviour

Natural stone handles freeze-thaw well when set on a proper base. Some varieties are slippery when wet, which matters on steps and around pools.

Whatever the material, the base under it and the water around it decide how it looks in ten years.
